To Darrin Hudson

I think everyone had a "Darrin Hudson" in their lives. Darrin Hudson was in my high school, back in Marlboro, NJ. You know, that person that you had to one-up all the time. Didn't matter what it was: Gear, hair, grades, sports, whatever...it was ON. Well for Darrin and I...it was kicks. Plain and simple. Oddly enough, in a school with over 1000 kids, me and him were the only 2 really into sneakers back then. This is my blog dedicated to Darrin. This is to tell Darrin that I'm still out there, and if he wants to battle, here it is son!! Bring it!! I've since lost touch with Darrin, but thanks to him, you all get to check out the kicks I have amassed over the years. So it is here, that I will archive every pair of shoes I own. It’ll include detailed photos, a grading system, a little tidbit behind each one and every single one will be available for purchase. (Simply POST A COMMENT with your offer). Some other little goodies sprinkled throughout also. Even if I updated a different shoe every week, it would take me about 3 years to complete this project. So sit back and enjoy! The project begins January 1st, 2006...

CHUCK OR KEEP?

cdsdmr.jpg

Here's a bunch of CDs I just picked up while traveling abroad. Yes, we've come to that point in world history where the compact disc has become a dinosaur relic. So I just bought all these CDs at the legendary Dance Music Records in Shibuya. One of the last great stores for vinyl and mix CDs. Hell, they even have mixtapes!! I hope they don't go the way of Manhattan Records or Cisco. I digress. So I've copied the CDs to my iTunes Library. And I've also synced them to my iPhone.

The question begs: What do I do with these CDs?

Do I stuff into my luggage and bring them home? Do I chuck them? Practical-Jeff says throw them away as I will most likely never open the cases again. Sentimental-Jeff says keep them so that one day when I have a 47-room castle; I will have something to put in my Library Room.
I'll let the readers decide. Help me out here.

Keep. In 10 years when there is a better compression than MP3s, we are all going to be kicking ourselves when we have to buy all our music over yet again.

I keep the ones with the best artwork and trade in or donate the rest.

Keep them!

I have loads of CDs that I have ripped to iTunes, but I like to be able to look through the sleeve notes, admire the art.

If you really don't want them you could always trade!

Hmmm.... I don't have the Jazzanova mixes CD :P

Hi Jeff, from my own experience, CDs are still better than MP3 if you listen while you're driving. If you don't drive that much, and would like to share these goodies you grabbed from overseas with music- lover. I'd like to offer a bubble cushioned envelope with prepaid postage for getting these CDs to save you some space hopefully. Enjoy the music and "iPhone"~!!

Since you arent a collector, give them to someone who collects. You must have a friend who still sports the wall full of compact discs.

Or you could drop them into care packages when it seems musically appropriate.

By all means don't let them end up in a landfill.

In the future everything will be on the internet so dont worry about the art or compression.

Unless they are CD's that it would be next to impossible to replace (defunct label like Future Primitive/MoWax; signed by artist; or have amazing cover art), I usually pass them along to friends who always seem to say "Where do you get such cool music"--educational and appreciated by all...

I would definitely keep them, donate or recycle the plastic cases, since they take up space. Put CDs and covers in sleeves instead or a folder. True that they are stored digitally, but you always need the hard copy.

maybe it's just me, but there's something intrinsically rewarding about having a tangible representation of someone's music. yeah, it might take up space in your suitcase, but let sentimentality take over. it's comparable to people who still collect LPs. everyone hates getting old, but everyone still loves old things... by the way! i saw you at regals union square the night batman came out... was too scared to approach you though!

Keep 'em! Always keep 'em! There was a reason why you paid good money for them, and one day you'll look back on them in the 47 room castle vault and say, "Damn, I'm glad I got these!!" They say you can't take 'em with you when you die, but just like my sneaker collection...I'm Takin THEM with me too!!

I would definitely keep them. I just bought a stack of CDs and looking through the booklets is something that I always enjoy.

BTW, I'm not sure if you know of her, but I strongly suggest checking out Lykke Li. I recently found out about her when they were playing at Bonjour Records in Daikanyama.

I say chuck the cd's and the case.

Keep the booklets...

How many cd covers can you fit in a shoe box?
Exactly. Keep them!

It's the only thing I kept throughout the years. I love going back and looking through the old booklets. Music is inspiring but sometimes booklets are powerful.

Just revisit your favorite album's booklet -Without the music. I'm sure you'll hear it.

Now THAT is the better I have heard. Great idea. I am going to chuck the plastic. Keep the booklet and the CD itself (in case I lose my MP3s) and keep everything in a box. I'll save tons of space both in my luggage and at home. Now...the search for the perfect box.

Jeff, It's called recycling. I'm sure someone as rich as you can have one of your "people" find a recycling place in NY. I would keep them, but please don't throw them away.

Stick them on discogs or eBay and get your money back and buy more music. I'm weighed down by over 5000 records and over 1000 CDs and I can't even bear to dump them. What do the Japanese call it? Otaku? Go to Jazzy Sport just down the road from DMR and across from Mandrake, a nicer bunch of fellas you'd struggle to meet and they'd be more than prepared to grease your palms with some exclusives.
