I think everyone had a "Darrin Hudson" in their lives. Darrin Hudson was in my high school, back in Marlboro, NJ. You know, that person that you had to one-up all the time. Didn't matter what it was: Gear, hair, grades, sports, whatever...it was ON. Well for Darrin and I...it was kicks. Plain and simple. Oddly enough, in a school with over 1000 kids, me and him were the only 2 really into sneakers back then. This is my blog dedicated to Darrin. This is to tell Darrin that I'm still out there, and if he wants to battle, here it is son!! Bring it!! I've since lost touch with Darrin, but thanks to him, you all get to check out the kicks I have amassed over the years. So it is here, that I will archive every pair of shoes I own. It’ll include detailed photos, a grading system, a little tidbit behind each one and every single one will be available for purchase. (Simply POST A COMMENT with your offer). Some other little goodies sprinkled throughout also. Even if I updated a different shoe every week, it would take me about 3 years to complete this project. So sit back and enjoy! The project begins January 1st, 2006...

TRAVEL TIPS.

I learned and observed a lot on this recent trip to Barcelona. From a commuting perspective, this was as hellish as it gets. Spent a lot of time on tarmacs, buses, runways, terminals and on lines so I guess I had lots of time to ponder the wackness of my various situations.

Some observations (These are really more for myself as reminders than anything else.):

Air Portugal aka TAP is probably one of the worst airlines in existence. Service was laughable. The planes are old and decrepit. All the airline hosts completely ignore the service call button. I had to ask 3 different people for a customs form. The planes were unbearably hot. (Like if everyone is fanning themselves with the emergency card; doesn't that give you some clue to turn on the A/C?) There was no toilet paper in the bathroom on the plane! Did I mention the service? Really horrible.

You know when people applaud when the plane lands? (BTW, I hate that.) Anyway, the flight was so bad that everyone applauded...TWICE. Once when we touched down. And again when the seat belt sign went off.

Lisbon has one of the worse airports I have ever seen. I heard they're getting a new one soon, but this current one really sucks. I always try and avoid Heathrow if I fly into Europe because their security lines are offensively long. But Lisbon is bad in other ways. Leaky, low and dark ceilings. Single stall bathrooms that males and females share. Horrible food choices.
Fly direct if u can at all avoid it. Yes it costs more. But 99.9999% of the time, you will regret the transfer you need to make. From dealing with wack airports, to higher percentage of lost luggage, to your time, to how it makes you feel to go up and down in altitude...it's just not worth the few hundred bucks you end up saving. Don't forget to factor in the stupid shit you end up buying when you're trying to kill time in a layover.

Finally, I have a suggestion for the airlines. You have First Class, Business Class, Economy Class...why not add "Family Class"? I don't care where you put Family Class. You can put it in front of First Class...but the idea is a designated section that families with young infants must sit. This would feature a soundproof door that divides it from the rest of the cabin. You could even trick this section out with foam pits, cribs, swings, slides, a sandbox, etc etc. All the families can gush about how cute their kids are and everyone will be happy. I could see JetBlue doing this successfully.

Anyway, again....this all might not pertain to you, but its really more of a reminder to myself.
As you were.

I'm all about creating a "Family Class" section on planes, buses and trains.

I *heart* kids, but NOT when they're screaming on 12-hour flights or slow, stop-and-go trains.

i completely second your note on the family class. families should also consider whether it is the best idea to be taking an infant on a 12-hour flight to begin with. they should just stay within driving (or boating) distance from their homes until the child can walk & talk. as a former frequent traveler (i spent 12 months straight last year flying between ny, boston, sf, seattle and LA), i feel your pain brother. great rant.

This question is for Jason Oliver, 3 posts above me (call it a comments section highjack if you wish):

Does Seatac have THE worst baggage claim around? or have you experienced a bigger catastrophe elsewhere? Im from seattle and sometimes i dread coming home, as much as i love the city itself. I figure its gotta be one of the worst around, as fas as major cities go anyway.
